Coaxial cable, also known as coax for short,  is the type of wiring used for your cable TV and possibly your modem for your internet service provider (ISP). There are two types that are used, the first type is RG6, this is the preferred cable used by Comcast. The second type is RG6 quad, this is preferred by any cable companies utilizing a dish mounted to your residence. The predecessor of both types of RG6 cable was RG59, which isn’t quite as good on signal strength as required by today’s standards. It is always best to have your cable lines independently ran from the source, to the TV or modem locations. Anytime you use a splitter to feed more than one device, it is weakening the signal strength.

Data cabling, also known as ethernet or networking cabling is used for linking your PC’s, scanners, printers, gaming consoles, etc. all on the same network, fed from a common router. Folks often prefer a hard-wired network over a wireless network due to the stability of a hard-wired connection. Cat6 has became quite a bit more affordable over the last few years so it is the recommended cable. How it works is, the modem connects to a router, also known as a switch or a hub, through a ethernet cable, typically right next to the modem. From the router, all other ethernet cables originate, these cables we fish through your walls, ceilings and basements to the locations of all your devices to be on the network.

Phone wiring doesn’t have as high of standards for the type of wiring needed as networking does. You only need a pair of solid wires 24 gauge or bigger; however, we typically install and recommend using Cat5 cable just in case you end up using your phone line to feed a modem for your internet connection, this way you are covered.
